Taking a Leap to Land a Finance Job

Taking a Leap to Land a Finance JobTaking a Leap to Land a Finance JobThis FinanceLadder members job search welches moving slowly until she gambled a steady paycheck against job satisfaction.Kristen Reed has always been lucky, at least when it comes to job hunting. The 40-year-old Long Island, N.Y. resident said in the past when it was time to search for a new position, she simply picked up a newspaper or logged into an online job board, and was usually offered whichever position she happened to apply for.Id always worked with smaller companies wherbeie I could make a larger impact, said Reed (who asked Ladders not to use her real name). And I have an entrepreneurial spirit, so I was always able to work independently, take charge and exceed performance expectations. From automotive to mortgage to hedge fundsAfter spending 12 years as a finance manager working in the automotive industry - where Reed said she was the highest-achieving employee on Long Island - she decided it was time for a change. Reed moved into a management role at a mortgage broker and made a third move to a different company where she re-evaluated portfolios for various hedge funds. But while the finance-management role at the hedge fund was lucrative, it wasnt her cup of tea. The position was less independent and didnt give Reed the freedom she craved, but the final straw was the devastating financial collapse of 2008, she said.I wanted to get back into a sort of independent/entrepreneurial role, and then, of course, the financial crisis happened, she said. Sure, I was making quite a bit of money, but then the industry fell apart Where was I supposed to go back to when the mortgage industry was gone - the auto industry?A trial run with a recruiterSo, Reed signed up for FinanceLadder in October 2008 and quickly made contact with a recruiter looking to fill a financial-advisor position with a major New York financial firm. The experience was new to Reed, whod always searched for and found new jobs on her own, but she said she was incredibly satisfied with the process.Id never worked with a recruiter before, and I didnt know what to expect, Reed said. But she was fantastic. She held my hand through the entire process and was constantly reassuring me.With the recruiters support, Reed said, she went through round after round of phone and in-person interviews, and was so confident of her ability to land the job that she suspended her job search when she was in the final rounds for one employer.I wasnt actually searching anymore I put all my eggs in one basket, really, because I was so confident I was going to get the job, she said. But after six months, her intense focus on one opportunity started to look like a mistake. No guts, no gloryI kept interviewing and re-interviewing, and the firm kept saying, You have to come back again and meet this person, and these regional managers, etc., and at one point I thought to myself, Come on What is the problem? Am I going to have to meet the Pope next? Reed laughed.Reed said that though she strongly disliked her full-time mortgage-broker position, shed tried to hang on as long as possible just to have some job and financial security.I hated that job, but I was holding on to it because I didnt want to let go of a salary in this economy, she said. When her discontent finally became too much to bear, she decided on a risky course of action - she quit with the intention of striking out on her own as a consultant or starting her own business. It proved to be the best move she could have made, she said, when yet another interviewer congratulated her on her resignation and almost instantly offered her the position for which shed been interviewing. The brde woman I interviewed with said to me, You quit a salaried position, in this economy, to strike out on your own? That is a gutsy move, and thats exactly the kind of attitude and spirit were looking for, Reed said.I really floored her she said it took a whole lot of n erve, confidence and self-motivation, and thats what cemented it for her that I was the right person for the job, Reed said.Reed started at the finance firm in late May 2009 and is thrilled with the position. She said it draws on all her accumulated skills, and also allows her the freedom of working for herself with the security of a constant salary.I am in the perfect place right now, she said. I couldnt be happier.

21 hacks for making a better salad so you can skip long lines21 hacks for making a better salad so you can skip long linesIts been a tough spring for salad eaters. First, there was the great E.Coli romaine lettuce scare of April and then Just Salad announced it would no longer chop its salads anymora. Thats right. Now you have to do your own masticating like its the 1700s.Dont you have enough stress in your life? But these trendy salad places arent going anywhere as long as lunchtime exists. mora and more salad chains are popping up on every block - Sweetgreen, the uber-popular and somewhat trendy salad eatery opened 20 new locations in 2017 - and they often have lines out the door which means your lunch break is shortened. And now, you have to factor in extra chewing timeBut you need that delicious salad to get through workdays day. However, what if you could make your own salad that was just as good as any store-bought one and would make you the envy of all your coworkers? It take s a little extra prep but financially it is the better move. Plus they literally put all the recipes for these salads on the internet. And you will have such a sense of self-satisfaction when you take out your homemade salad that the gloating rights alone will fill you up.1. Use a glass mason jarPlastic bowls are so 2014. Now it is all about the mason jar. You will not only be healthy, but also make everyone in your office think you have an Etsy shop.2. Pick a salad themeDont just make a regular salad and call it a salad. Pick a theme and include ingredients accordingly. Harvest, Summer Time Fun or Chipotle Cowboy are some good ones.3. Keep the dressing separateUnless you really like a soggy salad, keep your dressing in a separate container or bring a bottle to work and keep it in the office fridge. Just be sure to label it.4. Make your own dressingOr go one step above and make your own salad dressing. There are literally thousands of recipes everywhere so just pick one.5. Marinate chickpeasWho are you? Martha Stewart? But chickpeas are delicious and healthy.6. Freeze and reheat grainsMake some rice or quinoa, freeze it, bring it work in a plastic bag and then reheat and add to your salad. Note to self Just Salad is a huge fan of wheat berries.7. Add cooked vegetablesOh now you are really cooking. Add some cooked vegetables like roasted broccoli, steamed winter squash, and roasted tomatoes for that extra ounce of jutzpah.8. Use a salad spinnerWash your salad and then make it magically dry and fresh with a salad spinner.Throw a paper towel in there for extra measure.9. Massage your kaleIf you want to make a kale salad (and there is a good chance of this as eating kale appears to be a law in some states) then try this little hack of massaging the leaves before you eat them as kale can be a little tough to chew.10. Prep your veggies ahead of timeThe key to a great salad is fresh vegetables. Now you dont have an open salad bar like Sweet Greens and Just Salad but the Sunday before work, buy some really vegetables, cut them up and pack them in containers and then put them on your salad before you go to work.11. Cut all your ingredients to the saatkorn sizeIf you want every bite to have all the flavors evenly dispersed then be sure to cut all your veggies and proteins into the same size. You dont want different-sized ingredients in your salad. Youre not an animal.12. Cheese pleaseWhy are all those fancy salads so good? They key is cheese. Aged and brined cheeses like parmesan, pecorino, and feta make salads so much better.13.Get a glass bowlBring in your own glass bowl and people will swear Kate Middleton is dining in their own office.14. Add a proteinGive that salad some real fuel with chicken, steak or even tofu.15. Mix in fresh herbsIts all about the flavors.16. Add some fatYou know why Just Salad and Chopped make such good salads? Because they have some fat on them (but the good kind of fat.) Consider addingavocado, toasted nuts, bacon, sm oked salmon, or again cheese.Thirty-five percent of Just Salad customers, who create their own salads, add avocado as a preferred order topping.17. Add crunchy accessoriesFancy salads are also good because a lot of them basically have chips and bread sprinkled on them. Addcroutons, tortilla chips, crunchy onions, pita chips, or crispy wonton noodles.18. Chop itNow you can do what a salad chain cant Using a cutting board, dump out all your ingredients and if you want to get really fancy grab a mezzaluna (curved knife) but a chefs knife also works. Arrange the greens in rectangle and then have at it Everytime you get to the end of the rectangle turn it 90 degrees and chop more until you are satisfied with the size.19. Use different textures in your saladOne ofChef Michael Stebner of Sweetgreens five rules for making a great salad is incorporating different textures into it. He suggestsraw cabbage, celery root, or grains.20. But dont add too many ingredientsYou want a balanced medley o f ingredients, not everything you found in your fridge drawer.Adding more ingredients doesnt improve the flavor, and too many can make it muddy and confusing, Stebner said in an interview with The Washington Post.21. Add a side of breadThis kind of defeats the point of a salad but most of these places do offer bread.

4 Excuses You Use to Avoid Trying Something New - The Muse

4 Excuses You Use to Avoid Trying Something New - The Muse4 Excuses You Use to Avoid Trying Something NewA year or so ago, a handful of my husbands co-workers were organizing a group to andrang a 5K race in ur community to benefit the American Cancer Society. I thought it was a worthy cause- but, that didnt change the fact that I am definitely not a runner. Regardless of my whining, my husband begged me to sign up with him. And every time, I refused. Ill make a fool of myself, I told him, Ill probably trip or slow everybody else down. Yes, I had plenty of excuses for why the idea of me huffing and puffing in a pair of running shoes just wasnt a good one. After my husband asked me for what had to be the hundredth time, I realized something This was yet another time when I was letting my fear of the unknown hold me back. I was choosing to limit myself, because I had created this big, scary result in my head- before I even really knew what might happen. We all have the tendency to do thi s same thing- particularly when it comes to our careers. We dont want to take on that challenging project because it seems like its too far out of our wheelhouse. We dont want to make that major career change because it seems totally unfeasible. Or, we dont want to volunteer for that amtsstube committee because weve never done something quite like that before. But, you know what? Trying something new isnt all bad. In fact, it can actually be pretty exciting. So, as soon as you catch yourself repeating one of these common excuses to yourself, I think you should lace up your running shoes and take the leap anyway. 1. I Wont Be Good at ItLets start with the most obvious one. More often than not, you hold yourself back from something new and scary because youre convinced youll fail at it- much like I envisioned myself sending an entire line of runners tumbling over a curb. But, how do you know you wont be good at something before you even give it a go? Spoiler alert There really is no wa y to know. And, if you convince yourself that youll fail at something right out of the gate, all youre doing is jumping to conclusions with a bunch of unproductive, self-deprecating thoughts.Dont let the fear of failure or embarrassment be the thing that holds you back in your career. As hockey great Wayne Gretzky (or, for all of you The Office fans, Michael Scott) says, You miss 100% of the shots you dont take. So, go ahead. Take a deep breath and take the shot, whether that means going for that promotion or speaking up with a new idea in a team meeting. If you miss, you miss- but, at least you know you tried. 2. I Dont Have TimeTime can be limited and our days get ridiculously busy. And, leaning on your hectic schedule as a reason for why you cant take on anything new is easy to do.Believe me, I tried the very same tactic when trying to talk my husband out of that run I was dreading. But, heres the thing Deep down, I knew that I could definitely find the time- or, more appropriatel y, make the time- to squeeze in a couple more weekly workouts and training runs. It was just a matter of wanting to do it.As with anything, youll make the time for things that matter to you. Yes, that might mean some schedule juggling or a slightly earlier wakeup call. But, if theres something new or challenging youd like to try your hand at, a packed agenda shouldnt be the thing that prevents you from going for it. 3. Its Too Much WorkTying into the above point about a lack of time, its also tempting to tell yourself that tackling a new challenge will simply involve too much work. You already end each day feeling completely exhausted. So, why stretch yourself even more by spearheading that new initiative for your anfhrer or signing up for a course to beef up one of your skills?I get it- trying something new definitely takes a serious investment in both time and energy. But, dont all great things? Isnt there some old saying about how anything worth having is worth working hard for?P utting yourself out there and trying something new will likely involve some elbow grease on your end- I wont sugarcoat it. But, think about this Do you really want laziness to be what prevents you from discovering something new and potentially awesome? My guess is probably not. 4. I Dont Fit the MoldThis is perhaps the biggest excuse that echoed around in my brain when I was trying my best to slip away from that 5K without being noticed. You dont look like a runner, said that pesky, negative voice in the back of my head, Everybodys going to look at you and think, What is she doing here? Who does she think she is? Youve probably been here too. We all develop these ideas of what something or someone should look like. And, if we dont seamlessly fit that mold, we use that as justification for walking away. I didnt think I looked like a runner. But, maybe you dont think you look like youre ready to try for that management promotion, because youre still young and are worried people wouldn t take you seriously as a leader. However, heres the important thing you need to remember There is no mold- at least not if you refuse to perpetuate one.I know it can be tempting to think that only certain types of people go after the thing youre currently dreaming about. However, chances are, theres no firm and rigid criteria for chasing that opportunity. And, if there is- well, ultimately theres nothing wrong with breaking the mold. The reason I know that the above are all just excuses youre making? Because I did eventually run that 5K- and I crossed the schliff line with my dignity intact. The whole experience illustrated something important to me (other than the fact that Im right to admire marathoners- running is hard) Just because my natural inclination is to hold myself back doesnt mean I always have to do so. And, guess what? Neither do you, my comfort zone-loving friends.Photo of person talking courtesy of PeopleImages.com/Getty Images.

Forced out of work and pushing 60 Whats next for older workers

Forced out of work and pushing 60 â€" What's next for older workers Forced out of work and pushing 60 â€" What's next for older workers By any measure, Elizabeth White has had a stellar career. A graduate of Harvard and Johns Hopkins University, she began her working life at the World Bank, focusing on international development. Then she started her own business, which got its goods into places like Macy’s Herald Square but eventually failed after eight years, taking her savings with it. She was 47.She took two well-paying consultancies after that, stitching together a six-figure income for seven years until both gigs ended. She found herself unemployed at 55, and unable to find real work â€" it took her two years to find a new job, which lasted for only two years. Then she was out of work yet again, this time on the edge of 60.White was on the edge in other ways â€" financially, emotionally. Eventually, she found a group of friends in the same position and began to open up to them about the realities of being middle-aged, marginally employed, and financially insecure.Elizabeth White (Photo: Mig Dooley)Her experien ce â€" and that of those like her â€" inspired her to write “55, Underemployed, and Faking Normal: Your Guide to a Better Life.” In it, she encourages readers to form “Resilience Circles” with people in circumstances like theirs, as she did, and read and discuss the book together â€" like a “Lean In” group, but for people struggling with age discrimination and other reasons keeping them out of the workplace.White is part of a larger trend where working until 65 is no longer a guarantee. A recent  ProPublica study showed that older workers are increasingly being pushed out of work before they can retire. Half of all workers over 50 are hustled out of their jobs against their will, the study found.White spoke with the Ladders about her new book, the power of Baby Boomers, and the future of work after 50.1. On people should anticipate the possibility of being booted out of the workplace 10 years before retirement, and prepare to fill the gap in employment by working a myria d of jobs.“Yes, in that we are entering a period of financial insecurity.“Many of us are going to be forced to create what I call an ‘interesting casserole’ of work. Hopefully, it is a casserole that is aligned with your values, and you have different kinds of income streams. For it to really work, it’s about getting your expenses down. I don’t just mean having a budget. Do you really need 4,000 square feet? What do you really need?“For me, [my casserole] is consulting, it’s speaking, and it’s writing. For somebody else, it might look like something else. I have many friends, woman friends, who have an income stream with Airbnb. Many of them are empty-nesters. If you look at Airbnb’s numbers, the fastest-growing segment is women over 50. And then they might do a little consulting and something else.“The ‘interesting casserole’ is where I think a lot of people are going to land, and it’s hard to sustain if you have some huge, expensive lifestyle because it ’s feast or famine.”2. On there are many misconceptions about older people who find themselves in this situation.“We live in a culture where bootstrap ingenuity is prized. The truth is that bootstrap ingenuity is no match for disappearing pensions. It’s no match for flat and falling wages. No match for the escalating cost of healthcare. Your agency and personal will are not going to overcome rampant age discrimination and big global trends in automation and robotics. So this notion that this is all a personal responsibility issue and if you just worked harder is the mythology. “That said, I’m not saying that everybody could not have saved more. I’m not saying I could not have saved more. I’m saying that when you have this many people who have landed here … There’s something bigger happening.”3. On out-of-work Boomers have a huge effect on the economy.“People over 50 are over 50% of the spend on apparel, 50% on trucks and cars, 50% on entertainment. So when you don’t hire people, or hire them in jobs where they are dramatically underemployed, there is a consequence … We are huge drivers in the economy of what we’re spending. I want to see a more muscular conversation about what Boomers contribute and more multigenerational workplaces. I’m not a fan of this false feud between millennials and Boomers â€" Millennials are our children.”4. On Find your community …“When I was going through the worst of it, other friends of mine, we had started to talk. They really provided the scaffolding that we held each other up. We were able to t alk candidly. In D.C., nobody’s talking about their financial woes… You get no points talking about that you’re struggling. I want people who are feeling alone, who are feeling this whole shaming-and-blaming thing, and who are leveled by this, to be able to meet and have a place to gain their footing and share resources.”5. … and let them help.“I meet a lot of people who are in such pain, who are sort of full up with emotion. And so, even if they get an interview â€" let’s say, they get called in â€" when they get there, they’re what I call ‘leaking.’ So the person who is interviewing them may not know what’s going on with them, they just know, ‘I don’t want that in my work environment.’ It’s because they seem a little off, they seem a little intense, they seem a little full of emotion. People don’t want that on their team, they don’t want that on their project. They don’t know what it is.“And so the other thing that I think the Resilience Circl es do is allow people to vent, to kind of dial that [emotion] down a bit, so that when you go into an environment where you need to perform, you’re not bringing all of that.“I meet people who are in that state all the time. I get to see through our interactions the talent that’s there that we’re not able to access because people don’t have a place where they can see that they’re not the only ones. They’re not by themselves.“And so my hope with the Resilience Circles is to provide a new frame for people to understanding, which can ultimately be empowering.”

Smiling Your Way to the Top

Smiling Your Way to the Top Smiling Your Way to the Top The Duchenne Smile The Duchenne smile is what you could call a “real” smile. When we are flashing a genuine smile, our facial muscles are involved all the way up to our eyes. This smile lasts longer, and actually produces a change in brain activity, resulting in a better mood. You might have recognized the name Duchenne as it relates to his work in the discovery of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Yeah, real science here people. Smiling and Stress These changes in mood exhibited by people who frequently smile also affect health. According to Rodger Dooley, marketing pro and Forbes contributor, Smilers exhibited  lower heart rate levels after completing a stressful task  compared to subjects who assumed a neutral expression. Duchenne smilers actually have lower stress numbers than the social smilers. According to Rebecca Maxon of Fairleigh Dickinson University: Workplace stress costs U.S. employers an estimated $200 billion per year in absenteeism, lower productivity, staff turnover, workers’ compensation, medical insurance and other stress-related expenses. Considering this, stress management may be business’ most important challenge of the 21st Century. The ending may be a little dramatic, but it does stand to reason that smiling can potentially do wonders for your professional career. Work is full of stressors, and smiling is a proven stress reducer. In fact, Sarah Pressman of the University of Kansas said The next time you are stuck in traffic or are experiencing some other type of stress, you might try to  hold your face in a smile  for a moment. Not only will it help you grin and bear it psychologically, but it might actually help your heart health as well! Fake It ‘Till You Make It Most of us worked in some kind of food service or retail job during our college years. Smiles were a part of the uniform. It is a pretty common phenomenon for stressed out, hung over college students to show up to work in a horrible mood and leave with a fresh and positive outlook. It’s because we were forced to smile at customers! It turns out that even a disingenuous smile can make a positive difference in mood and stress reduction. On the other hand, frowns are tied to the opposite effects. So ,why not smile? Dooley said, “The smile doesn’t have to be based on real emotion â€"faking it works.” When You’re Smilin’, the Whole World Smiles with You Who could argue with such wise words from Mr. Louis Armstrong? Those aren’t just lyrics; research shows that the emotions that facial expressions convey are actually contagious. According to a Spark People article, “Studies show that something as simple as seeing a friend smile can activate the muscles in your face to make that same expression, without you even being aware that you are doing it.” When the people around you are happier, they carry less stress, they’re more productive and they just plain like you more. These all sound like the traits of someone you might want to keep around the office. Smiling has been known to convey traits like confidence, stability and conscientiousness- again, traits that employers and co-workers respect and gravitate to. Donning a smile in the office can reduce stress, create a positive environment through emotional contagion and even have positive effects on health. As cheesy as it sounds, smiles are free, so try it out.

Five scientific ways you can make your brain agile

Five scientific ways you can make your brain agile Five scientific ways you can make your brain agile What we know from neuroscience is this: to keep working, the brain needs exercise. It needs variation on daily habits, music, and other stimulation to keep healthy. The problem: routine takes over. We walk through the same doors every day, eat similar meals, see similar people, touch similar devices. It’s easy to feel like you’re going through the motions, rather than challenging yourself and your brain with new, engaging tasks.  Here’s how to keep your brain sharp.Immerse yourself in a hobbyIf you don’t have a hobby, get one. It keeps your brain active without adding negative stress, and it gives you something to be proud of.Catherine Holecko writes about finding a hobby that suits you well in a post for Reader’s Digest.“Let’s clear this up right away: Finding time for a hobby is totally worth it, especially if you feel busy or stressed. Losing yourself in a project you love gives your brain a break from whatever else is bugging you. And working hard on a project boosts self-worth. You feel proud of what you’re doing and how you’re spending your time. Passive activities, like watching TV or surfing the Web, don’t offer the same benefits. Ideally, a hobby gives you escapism (like TV does), but also lets you pursue a passion and feel a sense of purpose. Most hobbies build your community, too, connecting you with friends, new and old, who share your interest,” Holecko writes.Switch things up and use repetitionThe Mayo Clinic provides information on why being “mentally active” can help with loss of memory.“Just as physical activity helps keep your body in shape, mentally stimulating activities help keep your brain in shape - and might keep memory loss at bay. Do crossword puzzles. Play bridge. Take alternate routes when driving. Learn to play a musical instrument. Volunteer at a local school or community organization,” the site says. How to achieve this: Don’t get stuck in the same old patterns.A Harvard Health Publications post show s “how to keep your mind sharp,” including this strategy.“When you want to remember something you’ve just heard, read, or thought about, repeat it out loud or write it down. That way, you reinforce the memory or connection. For example, if you’ve just been told someone’s name, use it when you speak with him or her: ‘So, John, where did you meet Camille?’” the post says.Get some exerciseYour brain works better if you nurture the body around it as much as you can. Anyone who likes running or swimming knows that those activities offer us crucial time to think and help us generate new ideas.Justin Rhodes, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, answers a question about being able to “think better” while working out or taking a walk in a post on Scientific American.“Part of the reason exercise enhances cognition has to do with blood flow. Research shows that when we exercise, blood pressure and blood flow increase ev erywhere in the body, including the brain. More blood means more energy and oxygen, which makes our brain perform better.” Rhodes writes. In fact, walking to think was so effective that the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs used it to become more effective at his job.Engage the left and right sides of the bodyGeil Browning writes about this neat trick  in an Inc. article.“Any activities involving interaction between the left and right sides of the body will stimulate the right and left hemispheres of the brain and allow them to communicate better. This could be as simple as touching your left knee with your right hand. Think of these as good warm-up exercises. Every workshop that I facilitate begins with these exercises. And if I had my way, every person would begin their workday with a few brain gym moves. In addition to just being good for your brain, it helps you to learn and retain information. This is especially helpful given that these days each one of us is bombarded with messages from all directions.” Browning writes.Certain activities can help you keep your brain sharp during the daily grind. Why not adopt them now and see if your thinking seems clearer?

An Era of Consistent Construction DARPAs Open Manufacturing Initiative

An Era of Consistent Construction DARPAs Open Manufacturing Initiative An Era of Consistent Construction DARPAs Open Manufacturing Initiative As revolutionary as 3D printing is, the industry continues to face serious challenges that make progress slow. Mechanical inconsistencies and a lack of standardization mean patents have limited growth and applications for the entire additive manufacturing (AM) industry. And without the guarantee of safe, reliable, and trustworthy prints, the additive manufacturing industry wont be able to reach mass distribution. Thats where the Open Manufacturing Initiative comes in. Open Manufacturing was launched by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agencybetter known as DARPAin May 2015 to address key pain points felt by the AM industry. The initiative focuses on centralizing information gleaned from variations in print results in order to develop standardization of mass 3D printing, as well as to make more accurate predictions on the optimal method and outcome of any given additive project. The initiative is seeking to answer a host of questions: How do different materials interact, and how will they impact the microstructure of the print? Which combination of materials and printing techniques is most efficient? How can variability in final prints be reduced so that processes can be scaled? The Legged Squad Support System (LS3), also made by Googles Boston Dynamics for DARPA, is designed to take some of the weight off members of the United States military. The machine walks along soldiers through rugged terrain, carrying up to 400 pounds of weapons and other gear. Source: DARPA.mil The reliability and run-to-run variability of new manufacturing techniques are always uncertain at first, wrote Michael Maher, program manager in DARPAs Defense Sciences Office, when Open Manufacturing launched. The test and retest approach is inevitably expensive and time-consuming, ultimately undermining incentives for innovation. By identifying what works and then defining the standards for those processes, DARPA wants to help accelerate a broad range of defense and national-security needs by reducing time to production. According to the DARPA website, Open Manufacturing is testing rapid qualification technologies including: The Rapid Low Cost Additive Manufacturing (RLCAM) predicts materials performance for direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) using a nickel-based super alloy powder. The Titanium Fabrication (tiFAB) identifies key parameters that affect the quality of large manufactured structures, such as airplane wings. The Transition Reliable Unitized Structure TRUST) quantifies various elements of the composite-bonding process to enable adhesives alone to join composite structures. Source: DARPA.mil DARPA expects these current programs to revolutionize the standard for how the entire Open Manufacturing framework functions. We believe these frameworks are robust and broadly applicable to manufacturing technologies. If successful, it is believed that these frameworks can become or inform standards to enable rapid qualification of new manufacturing technologies, says Maher in an interview with ASME. Given DARPAs mission to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security, the Open Manufacturing program serves as a key strategic investment. Multiple programs under OM have been successful and are being transitioned to a number of federal agencies and across DoD [Department of Defense] supply chains, Maher says. Challenges of standardization in AM As promising as it is, the program does not come without its own host of challengesnamely, figuring out how to verify and validate the current framework and tools being used. Since the compilation, analysis, and comparison of the data the program produces take about two years to be finalized, it is difficult to gauge the efficacy of the investments. Furthermore, because the industry is evolving so rapidly, changes happen all the time that force DARPA to balance being agile enough to adapt to shifts in the industry and focused enough to achieve the goals the originally set for themselves. Still, DARPAs Open Manufacturing program is one of the few taking these challenges head-on, and thats made it a thought leader in the industry. Open Manufacturing has an extensive outreach program. Outside industry providing feedback for these technologies helps to further validate and/or improve the established frameworks, Maher says. He emphasizes that even in its early stages, the DoD and commercial industries are already benefiting from the way the Open Manufacturing framework facilitates technology transitions across the industry. Additionally, DARPAs new Manufacturing Demonstration Facilities act as knowledge bases and testing centers that hold the history and future of approaches to act as a catalyst for 3D printing. In an online post, Maher detailed how greatly the American military has benefited from advancements in materials development and manufacturing breakthroughs. But AM implementation has been difficultMaher wrote that the risks associated with trying out new forms of manufacturing has made companies and organizations reticent to try AM out. Through the Open Manufacturing program, DARPA is empowering the advanced manufacturing community by providing the knowledge, control, and confidence to use new technology. The new frontier of additive manufacturing can be intimidating to navigate; fortunately, theres the ASME AM3D conference to help guide you as you integrate AM into your business. Army Sergeant and Staff Sergeant Promotion Requirements

Army Sergeant and Staff Sergeant Promotion Requirements Army Sergeant and Staff Sergeant Promotion Requirements In the U.S. Army, typically a soldiers time in service the time he or she started boot camp to the present and the performance of that soldier will determine the promotion status of a military member.  Special performance can earn an early promotion in exceptional soldiers, while poor performance may stall a promotion to the next higher rank. Sergeant Requirements The time-in-service requirement for attaining eligibility for promotion to sergeant (SGT) is 36 months Active Federal Service for the primary zone and 18 months for the secondary zone. (Note: The secondary zone is a Below-the-Zone Promotion Program. Commanders can select highly qualified enlisted personnel for early promotion consideration. This is known as Secondary Zone Promotion). The time-in-grade requirement for attaining eligibility for promotion to SGT is eight months as a corporal or specialist (CPL/SPC), waiverable to four months for those recommended in the secondary zone. Soldiers in the secondary zone may be boarded with 16 months time-in-service and four months time-in-grade as of the first day of the board month. Staff Sergeant Requirements The time-in-service requirement for attaining eligibility for promotion to staff sergeant (SSG) is 84 months Active Federal Service for the primary zone and 48 months for the secondary zone. The time-in-grade requirement for attaining eligibility for promotion to SSG is 10 months as an SGT, waiverable to five months for those recommended in the secondary zone. Soldiers in the secondary zone may be boarded with 46 months time-in-service and five months time-in-grade as of the first day of the board month. Other Requirements The minimum promotion point score for attaining recommended list status for promotion to SGT is 350. The minimum score for attaining recommended list status for promotion to SSG is 450. The service remaining requirement is six months for promotion to SGT and 12 months for promotion to SSG. Soldiers competing for promotion to SSG must be graduates of the Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) prior to being recommended for promotion. Soldiers competing for promotion to SGT/SSG must possess either a high school diploma, GED equivalency, or an associate or higher degree. Promotions Each month the Department of the Army establishes the total number of soldiers to be promoted based on budgetary and strength constraints. The number of promotions is allocated by Primary MOS (job) within these constraints. Department of the Army promotion cutoff scores are announced monthly. Soldiers who meet or exceed the announced cutoff score are promoted if otherwise eligible. Take the Week Off With Bing Bowie

Take the Week Off With Bing Bowie Take the Week Off With Bing Bowie Happy Holidays!Take this week off from the job search. While I’ll encourage you to make the most of August, get the jump on the other guy in December, and use the summer slowdown to your advantage, there are times when even fervent job geeks like me will advise you to take a load off and skip the job hunt. This week is one of them. Whatever your denomination, this week is for family, festivities, philosophy and fresh thinking for a fresh new year.So I thought the most ecumenical of approaches would be to share this video of Bing Crosby and David Bowie singing a lovely, peaceful, percussive ditty together:Because nothing says “the holidays” like a traditionalist from the Greatest Generation and an androgynous glam rocker sharing a piano and a song at the most wonderful time of the year.Have a wonderful week, Readers!I’m taking the week off, but will be rooting for you again next week!

Promissory Note FAQ - United States

Promissory Note FAQ - United States Promissory Note FAQ - United States DefinitionsWho is the Borrower? The Borrower is the person or corporation that receives value (money, property or some service) from the Lender on the condition that the Borrower will pay the principal amount plus any interest to the Lender at sometime in the future. Who is the Lender? The Lender is the person or corporation that gives something of value (money, property or some service) to the Borrower on condition that the Lender will be paid a certain amount in the future. What is the governing law for a Promissory Note? The governing law is the law of the jurisdiction in which the promissory note will be entered into. Often the parties select the jurisdiction where the Lender resides. If the promissory note relates to the purchase of certain assets, then the location of those assets is selected. What is the Principal amount? The principal is the original amount of the note that is owed by the Borrower to the Lender on the date the Promissory Note is signed. Once the Borrower has begun to pay back the note, the principal refers to the amount of money still owing to the Lender at any given moment in time. What is interest?Interest is an amount charged to a Borrower for the use of the Lender's money. It is usually expressed as a percentage of the amount borrowed and is calculated at a specified interval over the course of the term of the Promissory Note. The interest rate is the annual interest rate. What does compounded mean?Compounded refers to how frequently the interest is calculated and added to the principal amount of the note to arrive at a new balance. The more frequently the interest is calculated, the more interest the Borrower will end up paying to the Lender. What is a demand promissory note? The balance owing in a demand promissory note does not need to be paid until the Lender demands to be repaid. In other words, the loan is repayable 'on demand'. There is no fixed end date for the repayment of the note. Upon demand, the Borrower is given a certain period of time to repay the outstanding balance of the note. What is the difference between a Promissory Note and a Loan Agreement? Both contracts evidence a debt owed from the Borrower to the Lender, but the Loan Agreement contains more extensive clauses than the Promissory Note. Further, only the Borrower signs the promissory note while both parties sign a loan agreement. What is the Term? The Term is the time length of the note. At the end of the term, the Borrower must repay the outstanding balance of the note. Promissory Note DetailsI am a shareholder. Should I use the Loan Agreement, the Shareholder Loan Agreement, or the Promissory Note?As a shareholder, if you are lending money to the corporation, use our Shareholder Loan Agreement. If you are borrowing money from the corporation, use either our Loan Agreement or promissory note. If you want an extensive contract, use our Loan Agreement. Use our promissory note if you prefer a standard basic contract. Do I have to charge the Borrower interest? No, the Lender can choose whether or not to charge interest. If the Lender decides to charge interest, they can pick how much interest to charge. However, there may be tax consequences to the Lender or Borrower if interest is charged but it is not a reasonable rate. What are the payment options available? There are four options for the method of repayment. Specific periodic amounts - the Borrower will make a certain payment to the Lender on regular intervals. Lump sum payment at the end of the term - the Borrower pays nothing to the Lender until the end of the note term, at which time the Borrower repays the entire note in one payment. Interest only - the Borrower makes regular payments to the Lender that are put toward paying off the interest on the principal amount only, with no portion of the payment going towards the principal amount itself. Interest and principal - the Borrower makes regular payments to the Lender that are put toward paying off both the principal amount and the interest as it is compounded. At the end of the term of the Loan Agreement, there will be no outstanding balance to be repaid. Should the Borrower be able to pay the Outstanding Principal without penalty?Granting this option enables the Borrower to pay the outstanding balance at any time without having to pay an additional sum as a penalty. If the Lender is making this loan as an investment, the Lender may not want to allow prepayment without a penalty as the lender would incur expenses and possible lost income in reinvesting this amount. Should the Lender require the Borrower to provide security/collateral for the note?If you do not take collateral, and the Borrower defaults on the note, you will have to take the Borrower to court in order to recover your money and your judgement can only be enforced against certain assets of the Borrower. However, if you take collateral for the note, then you may be entitled to seize and sell the collateral if the Borrower fails to repay the note. Does the collateral need to be equivalent in value to the note amount? No, if collateral is given for the note, it can be for any amount. If the Borrower fails to repay the note, and the collateral is worth less than the note, then the Lender can seize the collateral and sue the Borrower for the remaining amount of the note. If the Lender recovers more than the outstanding balance from the sale of the collateral, any surplus amount would be returned to the Borrower or his other debtors depending upon the situation. Signing DetailsI do not know when the Promissory Note will be signed. Can I fill in the date later?Yes, by selecting 'Unsure' as the date the note will be signed, a blank line will be inserted into the contract so that you can add the correct date after printing the document. Do I need witnesses to sign the Promissory Note?Generally speaking, there is no requirement for a witness or notary public to witness the signing of the Promissory Note. However, depending on the nature of the note and the governing law of the jurisdiction in which you're entering into the note, you may be required to have witnesses or a notary public witness the Promissory Note. Even if it is not required, having an objective third party witness the signing of the note will be better evidence when you need to enforce the repayment of the note. Signing the note in front of a notary public is the best evidence that the Borrower signed the note. Who should sign the promissory note?In general, at least the borrower should sign the promissory note. Depending how much the parties trust each other, you may also wish to have the lender sign as well AND get the signatures notarized.
